Anaergia’s Escondido Bioenergy Facility provides both electricity and heat to offset the energy needs of the Hale Avenue Resource Recovery Facility, a 15 million gallon per day (MGD) secondary treatment wastewater plant that serves the communities of Escondido and Rancho Bernardo, California.
Before Anaergia installed the bioenergy facility, the wastewater treatment plant flared the biogas it produced. Now, with biogas treatment and power generation operated by Anaergia, the wastewater plant’s biogas can supply up to 100% of its needs and all its average heat requirement. At capacity this can save about $500,000 a year in electricity and fossil gas heating costs. It also reduces the wastewater plant’s greenhouse gas and other emissions, equal to the impact of taking about 700 cars off the road each year.
This Anaergia build-own-operate project integrates biogas conditioning technology, emissions control equipment, and a 1200-kilowatt combined heat and power (CHP) system, and provides a performance guarantee. The wastewater treatment plant purchases the power produced by Escondido Bioenergy Facility through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), providing a stable, lower-cost electricity for the wastewater plant.
