Ambiente & Risorse plant in Broni, italy has the capacity to treat up to 40,000 metric tons of source separated organics a year and convert it into about 3,900,000 cubic meters of renewable natural gas (biomethane). The renewable natural gas/biomethane is injected into the region’s natural gas pipelines.
Ambiente & Risorse receives the food waste it processes from waste collection companies operating in the County of Pavia, an agricultural area near Milan. The plant uses food waste pre-treatment, anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading, and digestate treatment systems, among other technologies.
When purchased the Ambiente & Risorse facility it was serving as Italy’s first off-site facility for bioremediating contaminated soils, and it continues to remediate up to 30,000 metric tons of soil annually. It was purchased to expand the plant’s capabilities to include making renewable natural gas from organic waste. The plant also captures carbon dioxide created in the anaerobic digestion process. The biogenic carbon dioxide is liquified and combined with the digestate that remains after the anaerobic digestion process to create up to 9,000 tons per year of calcium carbonate fertilizer. In August 2023 Ambiente & Risorse has been sold and it is not part of the Anaergia Group anymore.
