Anaergia Inc. (www.anaergia.com) today announced that the 1,750kW cogeneration plant for the 1,981-room Hilton New York in in midtown Manhattan is now online. The energy efficient cogeneration system provided by Anaergia represents a bold investment taken by New York City’s largest hotel to reduce its carbon footprint, conserve energy and reduce the urban heat island effect.
The seven engine generators installed on the green roof overlooking West 53rd Street generates 1,750kW of clean electricity and 2,700kW heat for building operations. This satisfies over 50% of the electricity demand and 35% of the steam demand for the nearly 2,000 guest rooms. The electricity and steam heating from the system is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of Hilton New York by more than 30% or 10,000 metric tons annually. This greenhouse gas reduction is equivalent to removing thousands of cars off the streets of New York City. The system is also expected to reduce operating expenses of the building by nearly half a million dollars each year over the 20-year life of the contract.
Anaergia designed, built, owns and now operates the clean energy system. Anaergia’s distributed energy system meets criteria for the U.S. Department of Energy’s ITC program that aims to promote electrical efficiency and conservation of resources through combined heat and power systems (CHP). Similarly, the project also qualified for the New York State Energy and Development Authority (NYSERDA) program that aims to support the energy, economic, and environmental well-being of New York State.
“Hilton New York is dedicated to growing our sustainability initiatives and leading the hospitality industry in reducing waste and conserving energy,” stated Mark Lauer, general manager, Hilton New York. “The cogeneration facility strengthens our position as a global leader for environmental sustainability while allowing us to focus on our core business of providing exceptional guest experiences to travelers.”
“Hilton New York’s green roof and cogeneration project is a premier example of how energy self-sufficiency and carbon footprint reductions can be achieved through the onsite generation of cost effective electricity under a power purchase agreement,” said Steve Watzeck, CEO of Anaergia Inc. “CHP is a proven, effective, and underutilized near-term energy solution to help the United States enhance energy efficiency, improve environmental quality, promote economic growth, and maintain a robust energy infrastructure”.
